The Plank in our Own Eye

While the Democrats are hounding the Republicans for cleaning up Congress, we are allowing William Jefferson to run again in Louisiana. He’s the guy who in August 2005, had $90,000 U.S. “in the freezer, in $10,000 increments wrapped in aluminium foil and stuffed inside frozen-food containers.” According to the news sources, “the money was paid by a company named iGate in return for Jefferson’s efforts to influence officials in Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria for a potential business deal.”

They have him on videotape accepting a bribe, but he has not been conviceted yet. He was made to give up his seat on the Ways and Means committee, but he is still in office.

This guy is still running for office in 2006.  However, he has several other Democrats running against him. I’m not sure how this works, or if the DNC backs one Dem. candidate over another, but it just seems like it would be better if they asked this guy to step down.

Thanks to Laura for this one!

  1. This is very unfortunate. The chances are that the DNC – as a national organization – is staying out of it and leaving it solely in the hands of the Louisiana Democratic Party and that Jefferson is the official Democratic candidate, as he is the incumbent.

I think that Jefferson should have been forced to resign from Congress. What he did is unconscionable and he should be punished. Pure and simple.

Some might say (and probably have) that by removing him from the position we run the risk of losing his seat to a Republican challenger, but they’re wrong – LA-2 is a safely blue district.
